Future Panel
The following is a random list of things (and applets) that may provide inspiration into gnome panel 2.0 (3.0?)
I think that the icons/launchers in the gnome-panel should have a margin of 2px on all the sides. It will make a cleaner and better user interface and user experience. It will help also to organize the icons in a better ways and get a kind of grid or constant space between each icon. Here is a mockup that i made for this propose. icons in gnome-panel needs more air around!
Check out this screencast of the state of the art with kiba-dock and avant-window-navigator. Look at these for inspiration!
Desrts compositing panel work as a foundation
- D-Bus based interface instead of Bonobo
Support for mac style menubar, either transparently (screenshots) (bug) or optionally.
Play well with compiz widget support (like screenlets)
Maybe even moonlight could be used here (sans mono)
Combined Window list & Notification area & Launchers: Description Demo
Group based window management - an idea for redesigning the panel and use of workspaces
A hypothetical perfect panel would be much similar to current, with the inertial-things-have-mass bling of akamaru physics engine (from kiba-dock), with the reflection and other gui touches from awn (or libawn).
There would be support for some of the cool touches in kiba-dock and awn such as stacks, and the ability to change ones dock icon (like you can in awn)
