GUADEC 2015 (and the best pizza of my life…)

It’s not that long ago since I wasn’t aware of how open-source software works. However I began quite early to code my little (most time not useful) programs. Even I’m an electrical engineering student which does not so much programming, I got into the scene, into GNOME, thanks to Lasse Schuirmann (my study mentor nearly 2 years ago) :)

It all began with my programming project I needed to do for university. He came up with the idea to make 3D ASCII-graphics for the terminal. That was such a cool idea, that I just did it (and it worked!).

To not let the project die after finish, we wrapped up a new version (which died again). C++ is a quite powerful language, but can get really messy. Lasse already worked on a code-checking tool we wanted to use. But it had problems here and there, so it got dropped and … okay the bottom line is:

coala was born! :D

Actually GUADEC

coala has come more and more into the GNOME community (thanks to Lasse again :P) and started growing. As a maintainer it was obviously my duty to fly to the GUADEC (because of Lasse…) – for my first time. Getting from the airport to the hostel was quite a task (no one had the keys on the first get-together…) but I arrived finally.

And then GUADEC started, I grabbed my badge and listened some talks. I’m not that open-software aware so it was pretty interesting. Especially feature updates were cool with many nice pictures so you could be astonished.

Over the days I’ve met many nice people. Learning from each other makes really fun, everyone has different experiences with software, uses different programming languages and so on. The topics of conversation never ran out. And the best was to meet my collaborators from the coala project face to face.

Each evening after the talks or BoFs you could just sit down in the hostel lobby and code a bit, talk a bit, show others your work. That was the most relaxed time of the day…

All in all I have so many impressions from GUADEC left, I somehow can’t tell them all in detail :)

The best spent 100 crowns of my life… The best pizza Diavola of my life… If I’m in Sweden again, I will return to Gothenburg just for this pizza… Everything was perfect: taste, arome, look +1:

That's it ;D
