Command Activation

Confidence level: *

Status: proposed

Problem statement

Activating commands that are ready-to-use is perhaps the most basic of interactions with a computer. Pushing a button, selecting a menu item, all of these have "do this now" semantics. Even such basic actions need to keep the user in control and be clear about their outcome."

Elaboration

Buttons that allow press/release to activate, and press/drag-way/release to cancel in the middle.

Buttons that activate as soon as you press them.

Menus tend to allow cancellation.

Clarity of command labels ("microcopy").

FIXME: elaborate the above.
