SXSW is a major cultural festival located in Austin, Texas. It is a crossroads of several venues that include art, music, technology, and education.
One of the reasons we want to participate in SXSW is that we want to start exposing GNOME to non-traditional venues. These venues will give us opportunities to think outside the box. To learn from other areas on how they do community management, how they try to accomplish their goals in their communities.
Sadly, it requires a lot of money to have an official presence and instead we will need to rely on personal contacts to do what we need to do. There are a couple of things that we can do to mitigate this:
Prerequisites:
- it's important to articulate what GNOME's story is when approaching people to talk about it.
- We need business cards and other knicknacks. It would be nice to get usb sticks or something that we could give out to people who are really interested. With some kind of contact on the usb so that they can give us feedback.
Action items:
- Create account and put ourselves in the "registry", figure out how to market to individuals (DONE)
- Attend relavant talks on Saturday that have the same goals, strike up conversations, collect business cards, contacts
- Try to hold an event, advertise on twitter. This could simply be at a bar, at soem corner of a hotel, whatever. See who shows up. Maybe buy beer or something or something. We might need to get some pre-allocated money for this kind of spenditure.
